BACKGROUND With a steady and strong rate of growth over the last 30 years, preserving the community’s natural and non-renewable resources and building the public infrastructure necessary to support this growth will be critical. Issues of urban sprawl and managed growth are a primary concern to residents, and Brevard County can either move forward with a typical Florida growth pattern that could lead to greater sprawl, declining environmental conditions, and reduced quality of life; or it can take this opportunity to become a model for sustainable economic development and preservation of natural systems.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS Getting to Smart Growth in Brevard County is a detailed document of seven Smart Growth principles, developed by the Land Use & Growth project team. Based on the feedback of hundreds of residents, as well as concerned and interested groups and organizations, consensus was reached on those principles that could apply to Brevard County when considering the development or redevelopment of neighborhoods and communities. Smart Growth presentations, in which the principles are introduced and explained, are conducted for government planning and zoning boards, homeowners associations, clubs and organizations.
