Economy - Business Success Through Community Support
Economy
Goals of the Economy Project Team
Clarify the structure of economic program delivery.
Develop a comprehensive, coordinated, and seamless economic development plan.
Pursue economic diversification and growth of existing economic engines.
Foster small businesses and encourage entrepreneurship.
Create and expand a competitive employment environment.
BACKGROUND Although Brevard County has a strong economy based upon space and space-related industries, citizens were concerned about the lack of diversity and attention paid to other sectors, such as tourism; and how this may have resulted in a local economy where there is dearth of employment with good career paths and upward mobility opportunities, and discrepancies in wage earnings creating an environment of the “haves” and “have nots.” At the same time, the County needs to do a better job of capitalizing upon the assets it already has with respect to research, technology, and natural resources. The multiplicity of economic development organizations in the County was also raised as a serious impediment to effective and efficient program delivery and execution.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS The economy team is focused on increasing economic diversification, fostering small business growth and encouraging entrepreneurship. They recently completed a survey of economic development organizations and local businesses to determine any perceived gaps in services or functions. They are currently planning an “Economic Gathering” of the economic development organizations to review the results of the survey.
